I do mostly pixel graphics for my games, but I'm not very good at it. I have noticed that it is often possible to make it look better by just spending more time on it, testing different things. Problem is that I easily get bored if it takes too much time.

If we ignore that it is boring, what is the best way to improve my drawing skills? "good enough" or "perfect"? If I stop when it is good enough I can do more graphics than if I try to make it perfect, so I guess it's a question of quality vs. quantity and what is best in the long run.

I watched the youtube video where Rachel drew a brick tile. At first it just contained 3 colours. It looked nice and I thought it was finished, but she continued and in the end it looked even better. Is this something you learn to do by looking at other people's graphics or do you have so good feeling for what will look good that you can just do it?

When you get better do you spend more or less time on each thing?

Personaly, I work on my pixel graphics until I think they're done. Then, I post'em online to get some people's feedback, and if they've noticed something major or if after a while away from my art I notice an obvious mistake, I proceed to correct it.

It really just depends on how much you put time, effort and attention into your work, as well as practice a lot. Practicing the most you can is the secret to unlock better skills. You might do something a certain way by accident, but then decide that it looks good so you'll want to do it again on something else.

I'm currently practicing on how to make ice. I experiment and hopefully one day, I will get how to make it look good! :D

I used to do art for a team, which I never pictured myself doing. Before that I thought my art was terrible. But it turns out if you just sit and tweak stuff for a little while you can get that look you want. I didn't actually spend too much time doing the good graphics vs. the time I spend on my terrible programmer art. So I really think its more about focus and dedication. Just find something to reference, get a general layout, then start adding things until you're satisfied. Then when you're satisfied start adding details or tweaking colors.

You do end up getting better with practice, which helps you finish more sprites in an amount of time. It sounds like myself, spending a lot of time working on small details until i get bored, then not being happy with the result.

There isn't any shame in going back and polishing graphics later.

I recommend using a time limit for each individual graphic piece. Striving to make it satisfactory at least by the end of the time, then moving on to the next piece. That way, there isn't the time spend diddling on it and being bored. You can come revisit those graphics later and tweak them how you see fit, but it will allow you to produce quantity and worry about quality later.
