Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which allows body cells to absorb glucose and turn it in to energy. If the cells are not able to absorb glucose this leads to too much glucose in the blood, a condition called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is a form of insulin resistance. It is where the cells fail to use glucose and can sometimes be aggravated by a lack of insulin being produced by the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. Having a good healthy diet along with a adequate exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can help in the prevention of developing type 2 diabetes.

Too much glucose in the blood can cause much damage in the body. The heart, blood vessels, eyes and kidneys are all damaged by excess blood sugar. Damage to blood vessels can lead to either a heart attack or stroke. In fact if you have diabetes then you are much more likely to die with a heart attack or stroke. Statistics show that 2 out of 3 people with diabetes die from these diseases. The best care is always prevention. For individuals who have developed type 2 diabetes it is really a call to action rather than a call to acceptance. Many have been able to reverse their disease by proper exercise and a good healthy diet.
