Pixelate Magazine

This is an old online magazine for Allegro that started in 2001, but for some reason they stopped. There are lots of good articles, and it should be helpful to anyone who reads it.

Rock on, thanks for the links to online resources we can tap into.

I found a book that I thought fellow new C++ coders might be interested in:

- Mike Dawson: Beginning C++ Through Game Programming: (Link here: http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Through ... 083&sr=1-1)
This book has proven extremely useful in my learning C++.

I understand everyone has a different learning style, but I chose this book because I like the ability to have a tangible reference that I can flip through when coding.

Very clearly-labeled presentation of information that directly can apply to a given game.

Thus far, I feel each chapter adds a substantial building block that helps you understand the next lesson. It deals heavily (probably solely) with understanding the inner workings of console output. Looking forward to finishing this book to move onto SDL).

I feel that book is worthy of a read for someone new to coding (like me haha). Mike Dawson (from his bio) taught at the Los Angeles Film School in Video Game Design and currently teaches at UCLA's Extension school.

Here's a link to Al Lowe's Game Designs. It was originally posted on Moosader's old website, but I couldn't find the link anymore - so I decided to post it here.

I use to learn stuff with the O'Reilly books; even though they are pretty well-known, they're still worth to mention here.
Especially "Killer Game Programming in Java" is really cool, since it contains stuff like e.g. changing the appearance of
a window-deco by overloading the JFrame class.

Even though this thread lists Books, too, I created a new thread specifically for handy books that we highly recommend:

I've found an awesome youtube channel with tons of programming tutorials, including C++, allegro, Csharp / XNA etc.

main channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/CodingMadeE ... rid&view=1

C++:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2DD6A625AD033D36

C++ Allegro 5:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6B459AAE1642C8B4

Loads more there, you just need to have a look and see what catches your interest. The guy is pretty good at explaining things and unlike some tutorials, he's not at all boring. I'd say with a few exceptions (e.g. moosader's channel) it's been a huge learning resource for me.

I enjoyed reading "The Game Maker's Apprentice" way back in high school. It's a tutorial book for Game Maker version 7, but I don't know how outdated it is now. I'd say most of the content is still relevant, and that actually version 8 seems less inviting than version 7.
