Ever think you have an awesome, original(ish) idea, but it's always on the backburner? Ever find something that looks similar to what you were wanting to do? That awful, utter disappointment!

What was your idea, and the similar project?

I had an idea for an art builder program (Webapp for ArtSader) where you put together sprites based on pre-drawn, shaded shapes (ie, "Head shape", "Body shape", or simple things like "Block"), but also the ability to warp these (think the 3D Spore creator, but 2D). It would let you define skeletal animations, or maybe have premade ones for "human", "dog", etc.

I found a Kickstarter for that sort of thing a while ago, but I can't find it anymore. o_o; (not sure what to Google).
(I found this while searching, which looks cool. It's similar, but not quite what I was looking for)

My map editor, and Tiled. Although my editor uses scripts, so there's that.

Edit: "Supports input/output plugins to open and save files in custom formats" son of a b---h!

A couple of times stand out in my recent memory...

1. I had an idea for a pretty sweet electronic device earlier this year, and I was planning on eventually building it. A month or two later, I was watching Shark Tank (a show where business owners and inventors come to investors, asking them to invest in their business/product), and somebody had a very, very similar idea. He showed a prototype and wanted an investment to get it built for the mass market.. and he ended up getting a $500,000 investment.

2. Over spring break, I built a small HTML5 online RPG. Something of a tech demo, but it works, and I built a map editor for it and everything. Did a lot of googling to see if it was the first HTML5 MMORPG in existence, and it seemed it was. A month or so later, I found some small group also built a small HTML5 MMORPG, presumably releasing it shortly before mine.

While it's disappointing to find out somebody has already done something you wanted to do, you still had that idea, and there's nothing wrong with that!

If you can say to yourself "yes this thing does already exist, but I could do it a little better!", that's not always a bad thing, is it?

I think that as long as you didn't set out to imitate, and only to innovate, you shouldn't be too disappointed, saying that, I'll google around for something, and I'll get a bit disappointed if I thought it hasnt been done before.

I'd have to say no, because all my ideas come from games I played. For example, my RPG idea World of Gaia came about for my love of the Final Fantasy stories in every game, the huge cast from Suikoden series, and the headquarters from Shining Force series. I've come up with some original ideas, but don't have the programming prowess to make them just yet.

*shudder*...

I had an idea for an open source C++ 2d zombie shooter, called zombies++ (referencing the fact that it is C++ and that I am overloading the ++ operator in my program).

And what do you know: http://www.cs.stolaf.edu/wiki/index.php/Zombies%2B%2B

As an egotist I maintain that my take on the idea is better, normally, and if I can show my working out i.e. prove that my work isn't just stolen or derivative, then what does it matter?

I generally take this as a sign to drop the idea. In my mind, the idea obviously wasn't as original or cool as I thought it was. This is just my MO as an artist, though. When I'm working on a song, for example, if I lose excitement about it after a few days, I'll just nuke the whole thing, rather than try and tweak whatever I'm finding unsatisfactory. For me, it is better, and more conducive to creativity, to start from scratch.

I've learnt this the hard way, I had the idea for MapWork back in 2012, there were no competitors, but I had to wait a year to work on it because I wanted to use it as part of my dissertation, by the time I was allowed to put my preliminary research towards it, there were several editors that used the idea, that was a little deflating (although I reckon had I implemented iteration 2 and 3, no other tool would be doing the stuff I had planned in the browser, plugin-free)

The experience is very deflating, however there's nothing that says you can't take an existing problem and find a better solution, having competition means you have to push yourself to do better, and try and find some kind of unique edge, but that's easier said than done.
